You're hearing plenty about John Shimkus and Kyle McCarter in the Republican primary battle for Congress in the 15th District, but there are also several primary contests at the state level for area Republican voters to consider, depending on where they live.

Those in the 109th House District have a choice, as incumbent David Reis of Ste. Marie is being challenged for the nomination. Reis' opponent is John Curtis of Hidalgo, a truck driver and former homebuilder. Curtis is a self-described "constitutional conservative".

There is a three-way race for the 102nd House District, where incumbent Adam Brown is not seeking re-election. Former State Representative Brad Halbrook of Shelbyville is a candidate, as are Edgar County Republican Party Chairman Randy Peterson of Paris and former school superintendent James Acklin of Ogden.

There is also a Republican primary battle in the 110th House District, where incumbent Reggie Phillips of Charleston is squared off against challenger Jonathan Kaye of Toledo.

There's one State Senate Republican primary contest in the area. Incumbent Dale Righter, an attorney from Mattoon, is being challenged for another term in the 55th District by Mike Parsons. Parsons is a farmer and is a member of the Clark County Board.
