Local Schools Do Well at WYSE Regionals

What happens when you take some of the most brilliant minds from area high schools and put them under one roof? Nothing other than an academic face off, where teams are pitted against each other in eight subject areas in order to take home the regional Worldwide Youth in Science and Engineering (WYSE) championship title.

The regional WYSE Academic Challenge was recently held at Lake Land College and schools, registering 385 students came together to battle in biology, chemistry, computer science, engineering graphics, English, mathematics and physics

Neoga, St. Anthony, and Mattoon high school were victorious in their divisions and took home the regional championship titles. Winners in team and individual competition are advancing to sectionals at Eastern Illinois University on March 10.

Teams advancing for the 300 division were Neoga High School (460.0), first; Cumberland High School (444.3), second; Casey-Westfield High School (431.5), third; Altamont High School (414.5), fourth; Dieterich High School (401.9), fifth.

Teams advancing for the 700 division were St. Anthony High School (463.4), first; and Sullivan High School (460.8), second.

Teams advancing for the 1500 division were Mattoon High School (491.7), first; and Effingham High School (487.1), second.

Individual Results

The following individuals will be advancing to the WYSE sectionals at Eastern Illinois University on March 10.

Division 300:

In the Bio-science Division were Andrew Althoff (37) of Neoga High School, Hudson Emily (37) of Cumberland High School, Lindsey Ingram (37) of Cumberland High School, and Jared Ballinger (36) of Neoga High School. In the Chemistry division were Jacob Crow (26) of Altamont High School, Mitch Haddock (26) of Windsor High School, and Luke Thomas (24) of Neoga High School. For Computer Science were Warner Drew (20) of Cumberland High School, and Ryan Kastl (16) of Neoga High School. In Engineering Graphics were Warner Drew (36) of Cumberland High School, and Shelton Cash (19) of Oakland High School. In the English Division were Kimberly Hensley (67) of Casey-Westfield Jr/Sr High School, Rachel Bell (65) of Casey-Westfield Jr/Sr High School, Lindsey Alumbaugh (58) of Neoga High School, Lindsey Ingram of Cumberland High School, and Mikayla A Winters (57) of Dieterich High School. In the Math Division were Matt T Goedde (18) of Dieterich High School, Wyatt Young (18) of Casey-Westfield Jr/Sr High School, and Norris Harvey (16) of Cumberland High School. In the Physics Division were Jordan Kate Bowler (15) of Beecher City High School, Jordan Rettig (15) of Arthur Lovington Atwood Hammond High School, Ryan Kastl (14) of Neoga High School, and Wyatt Stone (14) of Altamont High School.

Division 700:

In the Bio-Science division were Grace Zeller (39) of St. Anthony High School, Ryan Baker (38) of Sullivan High School, and Max Todd (38) of Sullivan High School. In the Chemistry Division were Ryan Baker (30) Sullivan High School and Gillian Erickson (29) of St. Anthony High School. In the Computer Science division were Zane Blair (21) of Paris High School, Nate Johnson (20) of Paris High School, and Marcus Skinner (20) of Shelbyville High School. In the engineering graphics division were Ross Metzger (21) of Sullivan High School and Kenny Milam (20) of Paris High School. In the English Division were Emily Stutzman (76) of Sullivan High School and Bryce Pruemer (72) of Teutopolis High School. In the Math Division were James Kabbes (25) of St. Anthony High School and Andy Saba (22) of St. Anthony High School. In the Physics Division were James Kabbes (23) of St. Anthony High School, Kelly Laskowski (16) of Shelbyville High School, and Isabel Moore (16) of St. Anthony High School. 

Division 1500:

In the Bio-Science Division were Layden Butler (31) of Mattoon High School, and Lydia Druin (30) of Mattoon High School. In the Chemistry Division were Dolph Rawdin (28) of Mattoon High School, and Hannah Pike (26) of Effingham High School. In the Computer Science Division were Aaron Conley (13) of Effingham High School, and Tyler Smith (10) of Mattoon High School. In the Engineering Graphics Division were Tyler Smith (24) of Mattoon High School and Alexander Hardiek (20) of Effingham High School. In the English Division were Drake Hill (57) of Effingham High School, Taryn Kracinski (57) of Mattoon High School, and Taylor Benge (55) of Charleston High School. In the Math Division were Bart Kennel (20) of Mattoon High School, Ashton Haythorne (18) of Effingham High School, and Jared Minor (18) of Effingham High School. In the Physics Division were Bart Kennel (18) of Mattoon High School, and Andrew Bingham (17) of Effingham High School.

Students completed written examinations in seven different areas of study: Biology, Chemistry, Computer Science, Engineering Graphics, English, Mathematics and Physics. Each student participated in two tests, and the highest scores by members of each team determined the composite team score.
