A man long involved with everything Effingham died Thursday.

Norbert "Bud" Althoff died with his family around him at age 97.

Althoff had a many-faceted career that included decades at the Fedders plant in Effingham, eventually rising to president of the company. When Bud retired, he began a career as the City of Effingham's first economic development director.

Those noting Althoff's passing remembered Friday two of his favorite slogans about economic development: "You're either moving ahead or you're falling behind; there's no such thing as staying steady" and "A job for Dieterich, or Altamont or Teutopolis is a job for Effingham" since the jobholder likely lived in Effingham and worked a job in that community, or vice-versa.

Bud eventually also retired from working for the City, but still wasn't finished. He then went to work in support of two of his passions: the Cross at the Crossroads and the Family Life Center. Althoff stayed active for those two organizations as long as his health would allow.

Funeral services will be held Tuesday at 10:30am at St. Anthony Catholic Church in Effingham with visitation at the church from 4 to 7 Monday evening. Bauer Funeral Home in Effingham is assisting with arrangements.
