A man in Altamont threatening suicide led to a response by authorities Thursday afternoon, but the incident ended peacefully.

A call came about 4pm by the man to a relative, threatening suicide. The relative notified authorities, who responded to the man's home in East Meadows Subdivision. Police were able to talk the man out of his home. He was then taken into protective custody.

Altamont Police Chief Alan Heiens said the man was not arrested, and said the man was not armed when he came out of the house. The man was taken to HSHS St. Anthony's Memorial Hospital in Effingham for evaluation.

Altamont police and Effingham County sheriff's deputies were on scene, assisted briefly by St. Elmo police, and Altamont Ambulance Service was on scene.
