Tuesday night's snowfall averaged around three inches in our listening area.

Some schools in the southern portion of the area are closed today...St. Elmo, Brownstown, Jasper County, and South Central.

Light winds kept blowing and drifting snow to a minimum. It got colder through the early morning hours, though, dropping from 18 degrees at around 6am to 11 degrees by 8am.

Several crashes have been reported in the area as a result of this first snowstorm of the winter season, especially on I-57. The interstate was closed this morning at Mt. Vernon due to a collision involving a semi and a prisoner transport van. All of those in the van had been accounted for as of 8am. Traffic was being routed off southbound I-57 onto Illinois Route 37 at Mt. Vernon.
