The Construction Trades Education Curriculum (CTEC) has announced that the application period for 2016 CTEC class has ended.

Due to the success of the first year of the program, the number of qualified applicants has increased dramatically from last year to a total of 29 applicants. The applicants for the 2016 CTEC class are a diverse group of 2016 high school seniors, including three female applicants, representing most the six Effingham County School districts. This year’s applicants include students from Effingham High School, St. Anthony High School, Teutopolis High School, Altamont High School & Dieterich High School.

The next step in the application process will be interviews with the applicants conducted by members of the CTEC Selection Committee. From the 29 applicants who applied, the Selection Committee will narrow the field to fill the approximately 20 available slots for the 2016 CTEC class.

CTEC Board President Bryan Wenthe, of ProBuild, said of the increase in the number of applicants, "Enthusiasm is contagious. Regular reports from the guidance counselors, parents, and the students themselves indicate a high level of excitement for the class. When word travels through those channels, you know it's flowing through the hallways of the schools. We owe it to our facilitator/instructor, Jed Shumaker -"Coach" as the students call him, our construction industry site volunteers, and our board of directors for assembling and delivering such a fabulous program. Of course, this would not be a reality without the confidence of the Effingham Mayor and city council and our private sponsors for providing the initial and ongoing funding respectively. We hope that sometime soon we can offer additional sections of this program to fill the need."

The new 2016 CTEC class will be introduced to the public at this year’s Homebuilders Show at the Keller Convention Center on February 13-14. This event will also serve as an opportunity for the public & area construction businesses to meet both the 2015 & 2016 CTEC classes together.

Newly-elected Effingham Home Builders Association 2016 President & CTEC Board member Shane Frederking, of Frederking Construction, had this to say about the CTEC students at the Homebuilders Show, “The Homebuilders Show is a great opportunity for the CTEC students to interact with a variety of different businesses involved in the construction field. The CTEC program gives the students the basic knowledge, to potentially be hired by businesses at years end. These CTEC students will be assets to Effingham and surrounding communities for years to come”.

The Construction Trades Education Curriculum (CTEC) is a non-profit organization established to engage, excite & enlighten high school students to pursue careers in construction through education and to support their continued advancement into the industry through mentoring & direct exposure to the local construction industry. CTEC is a collaborative grassroots effort started thanks in part to the City of Effingham, area construction industry businesses, school districts & private individuals. If you have a student interested in CTEC, have them contact their school’s guidance counselor.
