An investigation by two state agencies has led to the filing of charges in Fayette County Circuit Court against Salem resident Duane C. Engel.

The 71-year-old Engel has been charged with felony sales tax evasion, a felony count of filing fraudulent sales tax and use records, and a felony count of computer fraud. The charges are the result of a joint investigation by the Illinois Attorney General's Office and the Illinois Department of Revenue's Criminal Investigation Division.

Annie Thompson, who serves as a deputy press secretary for Illinois Attorney General Lisa Madigan, said the charges were filed Wednesday. Thompson said Engel faces a maximum of seven years in prison if he's found guilty on all charges.

Engel Brothers Incorporated operates a Ford auto dealership in Farina. Duane Engel was president of Engel Brothers Incorporated at the time the offenses are alleged to have occurred.

Engel is due for a February 10 court appearance.
