Effingham High School teacher Joe Fatheree is included in the Top 50 shortlist for the Varkey Foundation Global Teacher Prize for 2016.

Now in its second year, and referred to by some as the Nobel Prize for teaching, the $1 million award is the largest prize of its kind.

A press conference is scheduled for 1pm Friday at EHS to discuss the program and its implications for Fatheree and the high school.

The Global Teacher Prize was set up to recognize one exceptional teacher who has made an outstanding contribution to the profession as well as to shine a spotlight on the important role teachers play in society.

The Top 50 have been shortlisted from 8,000 nominations and applications from 148 countries around the world. There are six shortlist members from the United States.

Joe Fatheree was Illinois Teacher of the Year in 2007 and was awarded the NEA's National Award for Teaching Excellence in 2009.
