Five people were injured in a two-vehicle crash west of Altamont on US 40.

The crash happened at 12:09pm Sunday a half-mile east of the Illinois 128 junction. Effingham County Sheriff's Department reports a vehicle driven by 76-year-old Harold Bergman of Farina turned into a private drive into the path of a vehicle driven by 37-year-old Janet Johnson of St. Elmo.

Both drivers were injured in the resulting collision, along with three passengers in the Johnson vehicle; 16-year-old Devon Morlan, 13-year-old Dawson Morlan and 14-year-old Conner Alvis, all of St. Elmo, but all five refused treatment.

Bergman was cited for operating an uninsured vehicle and failure to reduce speed to avoid the crash.
