The Mattoon General Electric lamp plant will be cutting about 50 jobs in the next few weeks.

A statement from GE indicates the cuts are due to changes in consumer demands. Customers are shifting to LED technology at the expense of the soft white light bulbs produced at the Mattoon plant.

The 50 employees are part of a workforce of about 225 at the plant.

The statement indicated that those who lose their jobs will be eligible for benefits including GE's income extension aid that can be paired with unemployment benefits, as well as job retraining benefits.
