One person was taken for treatment after a crash on US 45 at 1900th Avenue, about two miles north of Effingham.

Effingham County Sheriff's Department reports vehicles driven by 15-year-old Jesse Zerrusen of Effingham and 53-year-old John Holkenbrink of Sigel were stopped waiting on a train to clear the crossing on 1900th Avenue at 1:30pm Monday. Deputies say Holkenbrink was stopped on the highway, waiting to turn right onto 1900th Avenue, while Zerrusen was headed west on 1900th Avenue, stopped at the stop sign on the east side of the highway.

After the train passed, Zerrusen accelerated across the highway and struck Holkenbrink's car, which struck a culvert.

Holkenbrink was injured and was taken to HSHS St. Anthony's Memorial Hospital in Effingham for treatment.

Deputies cited Zerrusen for no valid driver's license and failure to yield at an intersection.
