A Clay City man was fatally injured in a crash Sunday afternoon.

State police report 81-year-old Thomas Scanlan was driving a pickup truck following a grain truck on the Dieterich/Clay City Blacktop, about three miles south of Dieterich, shortly before 3:30pm when the crash occurred. Police say Scanlan attempted to pass the grain truck driven by 58-year-old Earl Probst of Dieterich at the same time Probst tried to turn left onto County Road 750 North. Scanlan's pickup truck ran off the blacktop to the left and overturned several times before coming to rest on its top about 50 feet off the roadway.

Scanlan was airlifted from the scene to HSHS St. Anthony's Memorial Hospital in Effingham, but he was pronounced dead on arrival.

Probst was not injured. No citations were issued.
