The Effingham Public Library Board heard good things about the new library facility at this month's meeting.

The facility opened last week. Library Director Amanda McKay said, "The study rooms are a huge hit, and the children's room is a huge hit." The Board also heard that there might be a change to the glass doors as there has been some confusion about whether to push or pull them open, but the matter is being addressed.

The Board discussed whether alcohol should be allowed in the meeting rooms in the new facility. Some have suggested the option might boost interest in the meeting rooms. Board members are going to study the issue.

The Board amended the bylaws, deleting any references to Helen Matthes Library, the former facility on Market Avenue. It was also decided to stay with co-presidents as is now the practice and to eliminate the vice-president position at the end of the current term of office. The Board also amended the public comment section, eliminating a requirement to notify the library director one week before meetings if someone wanted to address the Board. The Board has been letting citizens speak if they attended meetings; now that practice is a part of the bylaws.

The Board heard the draft fiscal year levy will be $30,000 greater this year due to a substantial increase in the equalized assesssed value of property in the city.
