Altamont school board members dealt with personnel items at this week's meeting.

The Board accepted resignations from Alan Whitt as high school assistant boys basketball coach and from Megan Cole as high school assistant volleyball coach. Several people were hired, including Casie Bowman as eighth grade girls basketball coach, Steve Long as seventh grade girls basketball coach, Chris Guse as high school assistant girls basketball coach, and Kelsey Leitschuh as assistant high school volleyball coach. The Board also approved Brooks Osteen as junior high girls basketball coach volunteer and Mike Ziegler as high school baseball coach volunteer.

Board members adopted a joint agreement for Okaw Area Vocational Center for next year, and approved an early graduation request for a student. The Board also adopted the budget for the new school year.

Grade school principal Doug Hill reported that the Open House saw the best attendance in years with tours given of the newly renovated portion of the building. High school principal Jerry Tkachuk reported that action by the Illinois General Assembly will necessitate a new policy for suspensions in both the handbook and likely in Board policy. Tkachuk also said a complete re-write of the curriculum guide is in the works. Teachers have been asked to provide more accurate representations of their classes for the course catalog, which will enable students to gain a better understanding of the class when they are registering. Tkachuk also reported that for the third consecutive year, Altamont High School has been chosen one of America's best high schools by US News and World Report.
