No one was injured in a fire that totaled a home on the southwest side of Lake Sara.

The home was owned by the Hammer family and was located at 8185 E. 1450th Avenue. Shumway Fire Department Battalion Commander Justin Quandt said the call came about 2:30am Thursday. The sole occupant, a renter, was able to escape unharmed.

Quandt said the fire started in the rear of the house and said the back side of the structure was fully engulfed in flames when firefighters reached the scene. He said the house was a total loss. The fire smoldered for some time before firefighters were called back out Sunday to a rekindle of the flames.

Tri-County firefighters and Sigel firefighters assisted at the scene, while Effingham firefighters covered the Shumway stations. A representative of the State Fire Marshal's office has been on scene and believes the fire was accidental.

Firefighters were on scene until about 6am Thursday.
