An area man was injured Monday evening in a boating accident at Lake Sara.

Lake Superintendent Michael Dirks said the incident occurred shortly before 6pm around the area of the lake known as Gypsy Cove. Dirks said the boat was coming down the lake and a passenger was in the back of the boat when it apparently hit a wave. The impact threw the man, 24-year-old Ryan Beccue of St. Elmo, from the boat. Dirks said it appeared Beccue tried to hang on to the boat and was cut by the propeller.

A helicopter flew Beccue from the scene to Carle Hospital in Urbana for treatment. Dirks said it appeared Beccue would recover from his injuries.

Shumway Fire Protection District firefighters assisted at the scene.

Dirks reminded boaters to remain seated while a boat is in motion.
