Discussions on the possible consolidation of the St. Elmo and Brownstown school districts begin tonight.

A meeting of the Committee of 10...five people from each school district...is set for 7:30pm at the St. Elmo Unit Office. The meeting is open to the public.

A shortage of state funding and declining enrollments has fueled the discussion. The matter came to a vote in 2009, when St. Elmo voters supported the idea, but Brownstown voters narrowly disapproved. A majority vote in favor of consolidation is needed in both districts for the proposal to pass.

St. Elmo and Brownstown have already joined their sports programs and they cooperate in certain classes.

The goal is to have a referendum question on the March 15 election ballot in both districts.
