Two people, one a juvenile, have been arrested and charged in connection with a weekend altercation along Hendelmeyer Avenue in Effingham.

Effingham County State's Attorney Bryan Kibler Tuesday said 29-year-old Joshua Jones of Effingham and a 16-year-old male from Effingham were each charged in the incident, which began just after 1pm Saturday.

Kibler said Jones and another individual were traveling on Hendelmeyer in a vehicle when words erupted between Jones and the 16-year-old, who was along the street with other individuals. The vehicle stopped and Jones and the 16-year-old became involved in a physical confrontation. Kibler said police reports indicate that Jones was cut with a knife in the possession of the 16-year-old. He said no life-threatening injuries resulted, but Jones was treated for his injuries.

Jones was arrested on a count of aggravated battery on a public way, since the altercation took place in the street. The charge is a Class 3 felony, punishable by up to two to five years in prison. In court Monday, Jones' bond was set at $15,000. He is next due in court on September 1.

The 16-year-old was charged with aggravated battery with a deadly weapon, but was charged as a juvenile. The charge could lead to the juvenile serving time until he reaches age 21.
