(LAKE LAND STUDENT CLYDE POWELL SPEAKS ABOUT HOW HE HAS BENEFITED FROM THE TRiO PROGRAM)

Congressman John Shimkus stopped by Lake Land College Friday afternoon to drop off a check that will fund the TRiO Program for another five years.

The grant, totaling $1,155,515, will be allocated at about $231,000 each of the five years. The program has been serving Lake Land students for 10 years. Shimkus said, "It's the record of (the program) the past 10 years that sold the next five years."

TRIO is designed to provide assistance to individuals with disabilities as well as those who are first-generation college students.

Clyde Powell of Charleston was on hand to say that TRiO was of great assistance to him. Powell said, "the overall college experience is more difficult than any individual class. (TRiO) worked as a substitute for college-educated parents who weren't there. On behalf of first-generation college students across the nation, thanks!"

TRiO Program Director Marko Mohlenhof said students are identified through information they fill out when enrolling, but he said students are also referred by teachers and even other students who are benefiting from TRiO. Mohlenhoff said TRiO is not a class, it's information available to students whenever they need the help.
