The Altamont City Council has 30 days or so to choose a successor to late City Commissioner Bill Jones, although the feeling is that no one will replace him.

Altamont City Clerk Sarah Stephen said the statute indicates that the Council has a "reasonable 30 days" to choose a successor.

Jones died Saturday morning at the Effingham County Fairgrounds, where he served as Fair Treasurer and a member of the Fair Board. However, he was also in his third term on the Altamont City Council where he oversaw the Street and Alley Department.

The City of Altamont offices in the Municipal Building will be closed Wednesday from 9:30am to 12:30pm in honor of Jones' funeral.
