Hospital Women's Wellness Center Accredited in Mammography

HSHS St. Anthony’s Memorial Hospital’s Women’s Wellness Center has been awarded a three-year term of accreditation in mammography as the result of a recent review by the American College of Radiology (ACR).  The ACR Gold Seal of Accreditation represents the highest level of image quality and patient safety. It is awarded only to facilities meeting ACR Practice Guidelines and Technical Standards after a peer-review evaluation by board-certified physicians and medical physicists who are experts in the field.

Marilyn Boone, St. Anthony’s Women and Children’s manager, shared what this accreditation means to the Women’s Wellness Center and the women they serve. “This accreditation recognizes St. Anthony’s commitment and dedication to providing the best possible care for women in this area,” she said. “As the only ACR accredited facility in Effingham, women can rest assured that we meet the highest level of patient safety standards and image quality.”

The ACR assesses the following aspects of the mammography facility:

--Image quality.

--Personnel qualifications.

--Capability of facility equipment.

--Quality control procedures.

--Quality assurance programs.

The findings are reported to the ACR Committee on Accreditation, which subsequently provides the practice with a comprehensive report they can use for continuous practice improvement.

St. Anthony’s Women’s Wellness Center offers the latest in state-of-the-art technology by offering Genius 3D mammography, which provides the clearest possible images for early detection of breast cancers.  With 3D mammography, the radiologist is able to examine the breast tissue layer by layer so that fine details are more visible, as opposed to a flat image as with a traditional 2D mammogram.

The ACR is a national professional organization serving more than 36,000 diagnostic/interventional radiologists, radiation oncologists, nuclear medicine physicians, and medical physicists with programs focusing on the practice of medical imaging and radiation oncology and the delivery of comprehensive health care services.
