Work could continue several more days in the aftermath of a train derailment in Newton.

The derailment occurred around noon Wednesday where a spur line leaves the Indiana Railroad tracks to head to the Newton power plant. Officials were checking whether there was a problem with the switcher or with a rail.

Newton Police Chief Mike Swick said six cars were derailed, and 10 cars in all were damaged. Swick said crews are working to offload the coal by truck, and said the work is to be completed no later than Tuesday. He said crews might try to run a train through the area late today to see whether the main line can be reopened to traffic.

No one was injured in the incident.
