T & L Locker of Stewardson has recalled 100 pounds of uninspected smoked pork products sold through a retail establishment in Arthur.

Under state and federal regulations, meat products produced without the benefit of inspection are not known to be safe for human consumption and are required to be recalled.

The Illinois Department of Agriculture discovered the potential health hazard during an investigation that is ongoing. Meat and poultry inspectors determined the products included in the recall were not produced using mandatory Hazard Analysis and Critical Control Point plans, a systematic, preventive approach to food safety that seeks to eliminate risks from biological, chemical and physical hazards in production processes.

IDOA has received no reports of illness due to consumption of these products. Anyone concerned they may have contracted a food-borne illness should contact their health care provider.

Tom Wente of T & L Locker told us that the situation arose when the product he prepared for Shady Crest Farm Market was sold at retail by Shady Crest. Wente said the product hadn't been listed on his Hassett Plan for sale of the product at retail, and that led to the recall.

The smoked pork products were processed by T & L Locker and are labeled "Processed for Shady Crest Farm Market". These products were sold in Douglas and Moultrie counties between June 6, 2015 and July 7, 2015. The products are wrapped in white butcher paper, have the date code: "JUN 05 2015", and bear the establishment number "229" inside the Illinois Mark of Inspection.

The following is a list of the pork products subject to the recall:

--1.5 pound packages of cured/smoked jowl

--two pound packages of bacon

--2.5 pound packages of smoked ham steaks

IDOA routinely conducts recall effectiveness checks to verify that recalling firms notify their customers of the recall and that steps are taken to make certain that recalled product is no longer available to consumers.
