Six people were injured and taken for treatment after a crash Sunday afternoon on the interstate in the construction zone south of the Fayette Avenue interchange.

State police say a disabled vehicle in the construction zone caused other vehicles to slow, but a pickup truck driven by 72-year-old William Gibson of Jefferson City, Missouri failed to slow in time and rear-ended another vehicle. Gibson's three passengers, also from Jefferson City, Missouri, were injured as was the driver of the other vehicle, 63-year-old Robert Gall of Marion, Indiana, and his two passengers, also both from Indiana. All six were taken to HSHS St. Anthony's Memorial Hospital in Effingham for treatment.

Gibson, the only person involved who was not injured, was cited for failure to reduce speed to avoid the crash.

The crash happened just after 1pm Sunday.
