The Race Across America is again passing through Effingham this year.

The 3,000 mile bicycle race from Oceanside California to Annapolis Maryland began for sole riders on Tuesday June 16th and team riders on Saturday June 20th .

Team racers have a maximum of nine days to complete the race though most finish in about seven and a half days. Teams will ride 350-500 miles a day, racing non-stop. Solo racers have a maximum of 12 days to complete the race. The first rider came through about 11:30am Monday.

In 2014, Christoph Strasser of Austria completed the race in record time, 7 days 15 hours and 56 minutes. Solo racers will ride 250-350 miles a day, balancing speed and the need for sleep. Unfortunately, Strasser had to withdraw from this year’s race on Sunday due to a lung infection.

Local RAAM supporters would appreciate your help to staff RAAM Time Station 37, located at Effingham High School now thru Friday June 26th. People are needed to work 2 – 4 hour shifts. The time station is staffed continuously until the departure of the last RAAM participant.

The time station is located on the east side of the Raney Street overpass off US 40. Riders are able to use the athletic complex restrooms and showers, and teams utilize the parking lot for staging of their riders. Motorists are encouraged to keep a look out for the riders coming into town on Route 40 and then as they leave EHS and head on Fayette Avenue east through town.

If you are not able to work a shift, please stop by the time station to meet RAAM participants from around the world. In 2014 there were riders from 20 different countries. A solo rider is typically supported by a staff of 8-12. A team support staff could have as many as 20 people. Many participants utilize local businesses for supplies and services such food and drink, pharmacies, bike shops, RV repair, laundromat, restaurants, motels.

Local supporters say the Effingham time station is regarded as one of the best. There are typically snacks and drinks available at the time station. The riders and support staff are allowed to use the football facilities at Effingham High School. If you are able to help or have any questions please call Mike Tipton 217-246-1205 or 217-857-6235.
