If you felt a rumble Friday evening and thought it might have been an earthquake, you were right.

A magnitude 3.4 earthquake rattled Southern Illinois. Officials with the U.S. Geological Survey say the center of the tremor was nine miles north of Fairfield and was recorded at 7:41 p.m.  The quake originated from a depth of five kilometers and was likely triggered by the Wabash Fault. The last major earthquake to rattle Southern Illinois was on April 18, 2008 when a 5.2 quake caused minor damage to buildings in West Salem and Mt. Carmel, IL.

We heard from a number of listeners who felt the tremor. There are no reports of damage or injuries.

Official information about the earthquake is located here on the USGS website
