Those who paid the ultimate price in service of their country were remembered Monday at Memorial Day ceremonies across the area.

American Legion District 23 Commander David Harris was the guest speaker at the Effingham observance, held first at Oakridge Cemetery and then repeated at Woodlawn Cemetery. Effingham American Legion Post #120 was the host organization for this year's observance with Bob Thies serving as master of ceremonies. Gertrude Kenter, Lynn Donaldson and Kathy Sayne were recognized as Gold Star Mothers; that is, women who lost sons in combat. Reverend Michael Rosa offered the invocation and delivered the benediction. Pat and Julie Zuber presented the National Anthem and Sergeant-At-Arms Bill Copple oversaw the 21-gun salute. Calvin Kreke performed "Taps".

A Memorial Day observance was also held at Union Cemetery in Altamont. Our own Greg Sapp served as guest speaker. Greg focused on how the loss of a family member in combat can affect many lives. His reference point was his uncle, Keith Tipsword, who was killed at Pearl Harbor that marked the start of US involvement in World War II.
