Effingham city police spent much of Tuesday afternoon searching for a man believed to have been in possession of a stolen vehicle. Authorities now have the suspect in custody.

Police confirmed late in the afternoon that a disabled vehicle located near the north trilevel was found to have been stolen. They had a description of the person who was in possession of the vehicle and began searching in the area of the trilevel.

Police notified the businesses located near the trilevel to be looking for the man, who was described as wearing black and has a mohawk or a style of hair short in front and long in back. Effingham city police and Illinois State Police combined to take the suspect into custody shortly before 5:30pm.

The suspect is 23-year-old Martin J. Oliver of Mattoon, who is being held on charges of possession of a stolen vehicle, criminal damage to state-supported property, no valid driver's license and operating an unattended motor vehicle. Oliver is being held in Effingham County Jail.
