State Crop Report for Week Ending May 3

Minimal rain and warm temperatures allowed producers to advance corn planting 38 percentage points last week in Illinois.

Statewide, precipitation averaged 0.03 inches, 0.94 inches below normal. The average temperature was 55.2 degrees, 1.3 degrees below normal. There were 5.9 days suitable for fieldwork during the week ending May 3.

Topsoil moisture supply was rated at 10% short, 82% adequate, and 8% surplus. Subsoil moisture supply as rated at 1% very short, 11% short, 83% adequate, and 5% surplus.

Corn planting jumped to 69% complete, compared to 41% last year and the five-year average of 47%. Corn emerged reached 15%, compared to 7% last year and the five-year average of 21%. Soybeans planted reached 12%, compared to 3% last year and the five-year average of 7%. Winter wheat headed reached 10%, compared to 2% last year, but behind the five-year average of 23%. Winter wheat condition was rated 1% very poor, 8% poor, 35% fair, 48% good, and 8% excellent. Oats planted reached 91% complete. Pasture and range condition was rated 2% very poor, 25% fair, 60% good, and 13% excellent.
