Mattoon Woman Killed in Crash Involving Cycle and Deer (UPDATE)

A Mattoon woman was killed when the motorcycle on which she was a passenger struck a deer.

31-year-old Marla McKenzie was pronounced dead at the scene of the crash on I-57 in the north part of Coles County.

The crash happened about 6am Saturday about 10 miles north of Mattoon when the cycle struck the deer in the northbound lanes. The name of the operator of the motorcycle has been released. He is 43-year-old Timothy P. Dare of Mattoon. Neither Dare nor McKenzie was wearing a helmet.

Dare was airlifted to Carle Hospital in Urbana for treatment of his injuries. He was listed in serious condition on Monday.

Northbound I-57 in the area of the crash was closed for about two hours.
