One person was killed in a crash in Shelby County Sunday night.

The crash happened about 7:30pm in a rural area 1-1/2 miles north of the Shelby/Effingham County line. Tri-County Fire Protection District Chief Doug Ray said a vehicle ran off the roadway and into a creek bottom, where it overturned in about two feet of water.

District 10 Illinois State Police report that 62-year-old Timothy Flowers and his wife were traveling on the rural road when the car became stuck. Flowers' wife, who had been driving, got out of the vehicle and Flowers attempted to get the vehicle back onto the roadway. The crash report indicates that Flowers overaccelerated went around the bridge deck and landed upside down in the creek.

Police say they believe Flowers is a former Illinois resident who now lived out-of-state.

In addition to Tri-County, Illinois District 10 State Police were on scene along with Shelby County Sheriff's Department, Shelby County Dive and Rescue, and Cowden Fire Department and First Responders. Shumway Fire Protection District was on standby in case another incident had occurred in the area.

Emergency crews were on scene until shortly before midnight.
