Two of those injured in the tornado that struck the community of Fairdale in northern Illinois Thursday night are former Effingham County residents.

Ronnie and Geri Hopper at one time lived near the Watson Y at the intersection of US 45 and Illinois 37. The Hoppers moved to Fairdale, Geri's home area, to be near Geri's mother, Irene Clay.

Their son, David Hopper, who now lives in the home near the Watson Y, said his parents had said just after 7pm Thursday that they were heading for the basement. They just made it into the basement when the twister hit. He said his mom covered up her mother to protect her and suffered injuries including broken bones. She was treated at an area hospital and then released.

As for Ronnie Hopper, he was also injured and was taken for treatment, but is expected to be released sometime later Friday.

David Hopper said of the storm, "I've seen some photos of my grandma's home...it's pretty devastating." He's grateful that his family will be alright, saying, "It's just material things now (to worry about)".

The Hoppers are headed to Fairdale today to check on the welfare of their loved ones firsthand.
