It's pretty rare for us to have crashes involving horses to report, but having two in the same morning is even more remarkable.

The first incident was reported at 3:14am Friday, where a vehicle driven by 37-year-old Marcia Street of Newton was involved. Street's vehicle was traveling east on Illinois 33, a half-mile west of 2200th Street, when a horse walked onto the highway and struck the vehicle.

Effingham County Sheriff's Department reports the vehicle suffered heavy front end and roof damage, and the air bag deployed. Street was injured, and was taken to HSHS St. Anthony's Memorial Hospital in Effingham for treatment.

The horse was owned by Eric Brummer of Dieterich.

The second incident occurred at 4:51 Friday morning on US 40 at the intersection with 2100th Street. Deputies report 64-year-old Sandra Cook of Jewett was westbound on the highway when Cook encountered two horses on the highway. Cook's vehicle struck one of the horses, owned by Clint and Brittany Niemerg. The vehicle sustained damage to the front, hood and top.

Cook was not injured.
