A test that has become controversial even before it was administered has finally been rolled out.

The PARCC test is being given to most state third through eighth grade classrooms this week. The test replaces the ISAT or the Prairie State Achievement Exam.

The PARCC test is different because it is no longer a find the answer and fill in a bubble exam. The test has also courted controversy because it's tied to Common Core academic standards.

Supporters of the exam say it will force students to show they can think critically and write coherently.

State Schools Superintendent Chris Koch said the test will provide data to teachers and schools to see if students are closing achievement gaps.

The controversy that has sprung up around the test has some parents and students asking to be excused from taking it.
