St. Anthony WYSE Team Takes Second at Regional Competition; Other Area Scores

The St. Anthony Bulldogs WYSE Team finished second in their division at regional competition Friday at Lake Land College.

St. Anthony finished second behind Sullivan and ahead of Teutopolis, who finished third in the division. The loss to Sullivan was extremely narrow, 469.81 to 469.74 of 500 possible points. Teutopolis totaled 412.65 of a possible 500.

The Academic Challenge is a competitive series of tests created and administered by Worldwide Youth in Science and Engineering, and offered to high school students in Illinois and Missouri. The tests are now offered by more than 50 community colleges and universities and are designed to present a challenge to the brightest students.

Test material is drawn from senior high school and freshman level college curricula. 

For St. Anthony, Abby Brown got a second in Chemistry, Laura Deters a second in Math, James Kabbes a first in Physics, and Thomas Stephens a first in Math and a second in Physics. Other squad members are Alex Curl, Ben Esker, Peter Keller, Chloe Malone, Madeline McDevitt, Isabel Moore, Emma Richards, John Sandschafer, Allison Spraul, and Emily Wortman.

Joy Jones and Matthew Poston coach the St. Anthony WYSE Team.

Poston said the numbers indicate St. Anthony had the highest overall score of all competing schools, regardless of division.

In the 300 Division, Neoga finished first, Cumberland second and Beecher City fourth.

In the 1500 Division, Charleston finished first, Mattoon second and Effingham third.
