Effingham High School graduate Shannon Daugherty is in Arizona this weekend working as a volunteer on Super Bowl activities.

Daugherty is a student at Missouri State University in Springfield, Missouri, studying to become an event planner. She said by phone from Phoenix Friday morning that she is one of 15 students from Missouri State in Arizona for the event.

Shannon said the group attended an event Thursday night where they met Eastern Illinois University graduate Jimmy Garoppolo, who is Patriots' quarterback Tom Brady's backup, and met New Orleans Saints quarterback Drew Brees. She said tonight's agenda includes a gathering featuring a variety of corporate types. Shannon said they'd be dressing up and "putting on their smiles".

We asked Shannon whether she would get to see the Super Bowl or even see Katy Perry's halftime show? She said they're hoping to see Katy sometime during the event; she said their advisor is doing what he can to help them meet as many people as he could.

Shannon is the daughter of Mark and Kathy Daugherty of Effingham.
