Four people were injured in a crash east of Effingham Sunday.

Effingham County Sheriff's Department reports 81-year-old Marcella Bierman of Dieterich was stopped at Illinois 33 on the Teutopolis-Elliotstown Road, but then started across the highway and struck a van on the highway driven by 38-year-old Antonette Zumbahlen of Newton. The impact caused Zumbahlen's vehicle to skid off the highway and strike a large concrete culvert. Zumbahlen's vehicle then struck the raised rock railroad embankment with the driver's side of the van. The van finally came to rest on all four wheels.

Both Bierman and Zumbahlen were injured, as were two passengers in the Zumbahlen van, 13-year-old Carrie Zumbahlen and 11-year-old Mitchell Zumbahlen, both of Newton. All four were taken to HSHS St. Anthony's Memorial Hospital in Effingham. A third passenger in Zumbahlen's van, nine-year-old Adam Zumbahlen of Newton, was not reportedly injured in the crash.

Sheriff's deputies cited Bierman for failure to yield.

The crash happened at 10:40am.
