Fire did damage to the Motel 6 in Mattoon Monday afternoon.
Mattoon firefighters were called at 12:55pm to the motel located along South US 45. On arrival, firefighters found fire and smoke coming from both the east and west side of buildings. Crews were able to make entry into multiple rooms, pull ceilings and walls to gain access to the fire that was burning in plumbing chase and void areas.
Mattoon Fire Chief Tony Nichols said fighting the fire was made difficult by cold weather and freezing water that made the area slick and hazardous. A firefighter strained his back while battling the fire.
At the time of the fire, the motel had two rooms rented out.
Firefighters cleared the scene at 4:16pm. The cause of the fire is still being investigated.
Mattoon firefighters were assisted by Charleston Fire RIT, Lincoln Fire Protection District, Mitchell-Jerdan Ambulance Service, Mattoon police and Red Cross.
