It was a year ago when we last saw temperatures this cold. Back then, however, some areas had more than a foot of snow on the ground. While there's no snow for the Effingham area (considerable amounts fell to our north Monday night), the coldest air we've seen this season is set to move into our area late Tuesday into Wednesday, prompting Wind Chill Advisories and Warnings for much of Illinois.
Locally, the National Weather Service says we'll see wind chills from 15-20 below Wednesday, as winds will gust as high as 30 mph. Actual air temps will fall to around 3 degrees overnight, and continue to fall Wednesday to about 1 degree by 5pm. Full forecast and advisory details for our area are located here.
Officials warn that in these conditions, frostbite can occur on exposed skin in just a few minutes. Be sure to dress in layers and limit your time outdoors.
