Cumberland school board members have set high school graduation, even though we're not to the New Year.

The commencement ceremony at Cumberland will be Sunday, May 24 with baccalaureate at 2pm and graduation at 3pm.

Board members also heard concerns over girls basketball coach Gabby Bushue voiced by a couple of district residents. The concerns were in reference to a game between Cumberland and Casey-Westfield.

Trevor Grissom said he's the one who wrote a letter to the editor of the local paper over the incident. He said his goal is to get Coach Bushue fired.

The Board also heard a statement from the girls basketball team supporting the coach, saying "she is an excellent coach and has brought consistency and discipline to our program."

There was no open session by the Board on the issue.

Board members heard that many teachers are utilizing the 1:1 technology opportunities on a daily or weekly basis afforded by Chromebooks. There are still some troubles with wi-fi capabilities on a regular basis. Staff members plan to work on the technology concerns after the Christmas break in hopes of being ready for the March PARCC testing that will be completed online through the use of Chromebooks.

The Cumberland board discussed tax rates in relation to the district and neighboring districts. The Board then voted to approve the tax levy for the new fiscal year, and approved a five-year 100% property tax abatement for Evapco's new 103,000 square foot addition to their Greenup facility.

In personnel matters, the Cumberland board accepted the resignation of Kay Feltner, posted two openings for bus drivers, accepted Monica Lee's irrevocable letter of retirement after the 16-17 school year, posted the position of elementary classroom teachers aide for the remainder of the school year, employed Amber Russell as a high school Special Education aide as of January 5, and accepted Kevin Maynard's resignation as high school football coach.
