Fire crews faced a unique situation when fighting a blaze at R.R. Donnelly's in Mattoon overnight Monday.
Mattoon Fire Chief Tony Nichols said the fire was identified to be coming from a 110-foot-tall storage facility, and said the fire was approximately 70 feet to 80 feet in the air. Nichols said fire crews had a very difficult time getting water to the fire.
Pallets in the storage facility were loaded onto a rack system that is loaded by an electric crane, and Nichols said firefighters had no way to get to the pallets or to bring the pallets to them. Crews then began working off a cran on the outside of the building, cutting two holes into the building to expose the pallets so the fire could be extinguished.
Fire units began clearing the area around 3:30am Tuesday.
No injuries were reported.
