The western Illinois man charged with aggravated DUI in the death of a local woman was in court Monday.

60-year-old John H. Adams of Bluffs is accused of being under the influence of a cocaine metabolite when he was operating a semi on I-57 on October 17 north of Effingham. Adams attempted a turn in the emergency lane in the median, but the rear of the trailer of his rig remained on a northbound lane. The trailer was struck by a vehicle driven by 23-year-old Brianne Martin of Effingham, resulting in her death.

Public Defender Scott Schmidt indicated the defense would be requesting a reduction in Adams' bond, which is now set at $75,000. A hearing on the request has been set for December 18, which is one day when Adams' case is to be considered by an Effingham County Grand Jury.
