Two weeks after Election Day, Republican Tom Cross has conceded defeat to Democrat Mike Frerichs in the race for State Treasurer.
The late counting of absentee and provisional ballots gave Frerichs a lead of several thousand votes, a margin Cross admitted was insurmountable.
In a statement, Cross congratulated Frerichs on what Cross called a hard-fought victory. The State Board of Elections expects to certify the vote totals November 30.
Meanwhile, the vote totals in Effingham County have been certified.
County Clerk and Chief Election Authority Kerry Hirtzel said just over 55% of registered voters cast a ballot in the election.
Democrats in the Illinois General Assembly appear to have retained their veto-proof majorities in both chambers.
One Illinois House race in Kankakee appears to be going the way of Democrat Kate Cloonen, who holds a lead of about 114 votes over Republican Glenn Nixon. Cloonen's apparent victory means House Speaker Michael Madigan will be able to override any veto issued by Governor-elect Bruce Rauner once he takes office.
Republicans did pick up one seat in the State Senate, but Senate President John Cullerton still commands 39 votes, three more than needed for an override.
