One EIU student is dead and one was injured in an accident south of Mattoon Saturday evening.
Illinois State Police report that a vehicle driven by Jarod Jarmon, 21 of Shiloh, IL and a Senior at EIU majoring in Journalism, was northbound on I-57 near the Route 45 interchange. Police say the vehicle slid off the Interstate at about 8:30 pm, possibly due to slick conditions at the time, overturned and went down an embankment.
Killed in the crash was Samantha Middendorf, 20 of Fayetteville, IL. She was a Sophomore at EIU, majoring in Journalism and the entertainment editor for the Daily Eastern News, EIU's student newspaper.
Police say neither was wearing their seatbelt. Jarmon was ejected from the vehicle while Middendorf was partially ejected. Jarmon was taken to Carle Hospital in Champaign.
