The person that struck a scooter, injured the driver and left the scene of an accident Wednesday evening in Effingham has turned himself in.

Wally Q. Thompson, 51, Effingham, came forward to Effingham City Police Friday and admitted to being involved in the hit and run accident.

The crash occurred at 6:49pm at Willow and Wabash. Kurt Buehnerkemper of Effingham was driving the scooter and had just left his meeting as a member of the Effingham City Plan Commission. Buehnerkemper was injured in the crash and taken to HSHS St. Anthony's Memorial Hospital in Effingham for treatment, then reportedly taken to another hospital for additional treatment.

The vehicle driven by Thompson left the scene, leaving behind debris that indicated the vehicle was a dark green Toyota car or truck. Police Wednesday evening asked for the public's help in locating the vehicle involved.

City police say the case will be forwarded to the Effingham County State’s Attorney’s Office. No charges or citations have been filed at this time.
