The Effingham County Board has designated the week of October 23-31 as Red Ribbon Week 2014.

Red Ribbon Week has taken place for many years and is designed to promote a drug-free lifestyle. The effort was established in memory of Special Agent Enrique "Kiki" Camerena, who was killed by Mexican druglords in the mid-1980s while working undercover.

The Effingham County Drug Alert Council has headed the Red Ribbon Week effort locally, working in conjunction with Effingham County Operation Snowball and other organizations. Activities include a poster contest involving students from a number of local schools.
