The two defendants in armed robbery and home invasion cases in Coles County entered not guilty pleas Tuesday.

24-year-old Nicholas Jackson and 21-year-old Zachary Sapp, both of Toledo, are charged with entering a home on South 30th Street in Mattoon in March and tying up the family members inside the residence. They are also charged with holding up Casey's General Store in Mattoon in August.

Both men waived preliminary hearings. Trial dates were not set for the defendants, as each will first undergo examination by CEAD Council staff members. Status hearings for both men were set for September 22; Jackson at 9am, Sapp at 1pm.

Each man faces $500,000 bond on the home invasion counts, and $100,000 bond on the armed robbery charges.

Meanwhile, Jackson has been charged in Effingham County with armed robbery for the August holdup of Econolodge on West Fayette in Effingham. Court proceedings in the Effingham County case are on hold until the Coles County cases move ahead.
