The Cowden-Herrick Board of Education Thursday voted to put a one-acre tract of land up for sale for a possible retail development.

Cowden-Herrick Superintendent Darrell Gordon said Dollar General is interested in locating a store in Cowden. The one-acre tract just north of Cowden-Herrick High School would give the store visibility for anyone traveling through Cowden on Illinois 128 or anyone traveling on the Herrick Blacktop.

Gordon said the store has to secure three location options before reaching a decision, but he said the site by the school seems to be the favorite. He said the retail business would be good for all of the taxing bodies and good for the shoppers from both Cowden and Herrick.

The Board voted to seek a minimum bid of $55,000 for the parcel. Sealed bids will be received until the Board's regular September meeting.
