Shelby County State's Attorney Gina Vonderheide wants to make the public aware of a fundraising scam in her county.

Vonderheide said the caller is telling residents that he is soliciting donations for the Shelbyville Fire Department and will ask you to give money. It's believed the calls are coming from the 630 area code.

The caller will discourage you from donating in person to the fire department, saying that such donations are "illegal".

According to Shelbyville Fire Chief Gary Lynch, the fire department did not hire anyone to solicit donations over the phone and anyone calling and asking for donations on behalf of the fire department is participating in a scam.

If you or someone you know has already donated over the telephone, you're urged to contact your local law enforcement agency.
