Forecast and Excessive Heat Warning details are located in our weather section.
The Effingham County Health Department and Effingham County Emergency Management Agency urge county residents to continue to take precautions due to the forecast of excessive heat and humidity.
The Illinois Department of Public Health recommends these steps:
- Increase fluid intake, but avoid drinks with sugar, caffeine and alcohol
- Decrease strenuous outdoor activities and remain in air-conditioning when possible
- Check on the well-being of elderly family and friends who may be living alone
Symptoms of heat-related illness include headaches, skin that is hot to the touch, increased body temperature, loss of consciousness, seizures and irregular heartbeats. Individuals with chronic health conditions should be monitored because they may be more susceptible to the heat. Residents are encouraged to also make preparations for their pets, as well.
These locations are again available as cooling centers today:
- Teutopolis Knights of Columbus Hall from 1-6pm
- Altamont Municipal Building until 5pm
- Edgewood American Legion Building from noon-6pm
- Dieterich--if cooling is needed, please phone 217-994-2602
For more information, phone the Effingham County Health Department at 217-342-9237 or the Effingham County Emergency Management Agency at 217-536-6169.
